Dave Hannon: News

Dave Clarke 1956-2006 - October 21, 2006

IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS AND A HEAVY HEART THAT I MUST ANNOUNCE THE PASSING OF MY GOOD FRIEND AND BROTHER IN THE BLUES, DAVE CLARKE... DAVE LEFT US UNEXPECTEDLY ON OCTOBER 19TH, 2006, TAKING WITH HIM A LIFE-LONG PASSION FOR THE BLUES. HE BEGAN HIS CAREER IN 1972 AS A HARMONICIST, MASTERED THAT, AND MOVED ON TO BECOME, IN MY OPINION, ONE OF THE GREAT BLUES BASSISTS OF OUR TIME. HE PLAYED WITH EVERYONE, FROM BIG MAMA THORNTON TO LUTHER "GUITAR JR" JOHNSON TO THE RADIO KINGS AND HARP ACE, JERRY PORTNOY.
HIS FRIENDSHIP AND PLAYING TOUCHED LEGIONS OF PEOPLE, BOTH MUSICIANS AND FANS ALIKE. WE WILL MISS YOU, DAVE. GODSPEED.....PLEASE FEEL FREE TO LEAVE A MESSAGE IN OUR GUESTBOOK AND VIEW PHOTOS ON OUR PHOTO PAGE. [SPECIAL THANKS TO J.C. STEARNS JR AND GREG SARNI FOR THE BOSTON BLUES FEST PHOTOS, AND TO TODD GIEG FOR THE PORTRAITS OF DAVE, WITH AND WITHOUT HIS BASS.]

Solid Sinnin' Press Release - December 11, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Dave Hannon & the Solid Sinners’ awesome Solid Sinnin’ ep

The Proof Is In The Pudding, Baby! Listen For Yourself !

Boston, Massachusetts, USA:

I refuse to tell you how fabulous I think Dave Hannon & the Solid Sinners are. I mean, I could, but I really want you to discover that for yourself. Listen to “Solid Sinnin’,” the first audio release from Dave Hannon & the Solid Sinners. It speaks well enough for itself without me yammering on from my obviously biased point of view. Think about it. Why would I want to inflate your expectations? What good does that do me, or you, for that matter?

Take the Solid Sinners, for instance. To what end would I inform you that their collective resumés read like a Who’s Who in the Blues? Members of the Solid Sinners have played in the actual bands of: Junior Wells; Buddy Guy; John Lee Hooker; Luther “Guitar Jr.” Johnson; Jerry Portnoy; The Radio Kings, and many others, but...the proof, as they say, is in the pudding, baby, ...(right there on that cd there)....I certainly wouldn’t want to encumber your experience by disclosing that guitarist, Charlie Baum is one of the most artful and inventive players on the contemporary Blues & Roots circuit, and that his original style refreshingly avoids the clichés that overwhelm the genre. I’m afraid you’ll just have to hear that for yourself....Of course, I would never wax prejudicial, telling you how bassist, Dave Clarke and drummer, Frosty Padgett burn some of the meanest and deepest grooves into these cuts that I’ve heard since my mammy had me in nappies. You’ll figure all that out on your own, ....and please...please don’t let me burden you with overwrought descriptions of Dave Hannon’s clever songwriting or his spot-on vocals. Let’s not even bring up his soulful and driven harmonica playing. Again, it’s all right there on the cd sitting in front of you. Why should I give it away and spoil the surprise? OK. Go ahead now, and give it a good listen. I’ll wait...

[insert cd into player now]

While listening to these five cuts, you might sense that these guys are seasoned professionals. You would be right. A strong blues aesthetic and professional musicianship elevate Dave Hannon and the Solid Sinners above the typical beer-soaked, barroom blues band. Instead, expect a roller coaster ride of high-energy original songs. Tight, groovy and rhythm-driven, this band will move you with their smart, contemporary take on the blues. When you hear them play, you just might rediscover what made you love the music in the first place.

These recordings are available for free downloading at our website: www.davehannonband.com. Please feel free to mention this to your listeners and readers. A limited edition of one hundred cds, signed (by the musicians) and numbered, is available for sale at: www.cdbaby.com/hannon .
